Carly M. Gillespie

Carly was born and raised outside of Asheville, North Carolina. She relocated to Fayetteville, North Carolina because of her husband's military service. Carly is well versed in the complexities of domestic issues within the military community, including division of military benefits and interstate custody matters. Carly has participated in presentations for the U.S. Army's Judge Advocate General's (JAG) Corps, serving as a guest speaker and providing guidance as it related to NC civil matters.

Carly graduated from Boston University with a bachelor's degree in Cellular, Molecular, Genetic Biology. Carly also graduated from Boston University School of Public Health with a Master in Public Health, concentrating on health law, ethics, and human rights, with a focus on sexual and domestic violence. Before attending law school, Carly worked for the Honorable Mary Staley Clark, Superior Court Judge in Cobb County, Georgia where she assisted the Judge with civil and criminal cases of all kinds, as well as assisting with Mental Health Court, a diversion program which helped keep those with mental illness out of jail and provided them with tools to be successful in life.

Carly attended the University of South Carolina School of Law and she graduated with honors. Throughout her time in law school, Carly was involved with the Public Interest Law Society, as a member, and the President. The Public Interest Law Society's largest school involvement was putting on the Faculty Auction every year, which raised money for the Public Interest Law Society Grants, given to students who took non-paying summer jobs in a public interest field. Carly was also on the South Carolina Law Review, as an editor and the symposium editor. As Symposium Editor, she helped organize the annual Law Review Symposium, specifically on Human Trafficking which was a two-day event and included speakers from around the world. Carly was also a research assistant for the Rule of Law Collaborative, where she assisted Professor Jessica Pishko on her project on sheriff's accountability and duties around the country, and her work was featured in the New York Times. Carly also was a Legal Research, Analysis, and Writing Tutor throughout her time in law school.

Before joining the Hardin Law Firm, worked with the Honorable J. Michelle Childs of the Federal District of South Carolina. Additionally, Carly worked at the South Carolina Attorney General's Office in the Criminal Appellate Section where she wrote criminal appellate briefs, on behalf of the State, dealing with a variety of topics including reconsideration of guilty pleas, alleged 4th Amendment search and seizure violations, unlawful confessions under Miranda, and unlawful arrests. She also worked in the General Prosecution Section where she worked on a variety of cases for prosecution for the State of South Carolina, including murder, attempted murder, robbery, tax evasion, and insurance fraud. Carly also worked at the North Carolina Attorney General's Office in the Public Protection Section. Carly has also worked at the Cumberland County District Attorney's Office, handling DWI and other small traffic matters as well as assisting with complex Human Trafficking, Child Sexual Abuse, and Murder cases. She also worked as an associate at King Law Firm, where she practiced both criminal and family law.
